Victorian Neighborhood

White Street Fire Station No. 3

Springfield, MA

Constrained Site

Dore +Whittier was hired for design and construction of a new fire station on a small, constrained, triangular-shaped site bounded by White and Vermont Streets. The living space is located above the apparatus bays to minimize site impacts and allow for personnel parking. In this densely populated Victorian-era neighborhood, the three-story station strategically blends with the surrounding houses with long sloping roofs.

Leed Gold Achieved

Working with an owner-established budget, the design team provided a design solution that met project goals: deliver a 50-year building that is energy efficient and as “green” as possible while minimizing impact to the neighborhood during construction and provide a community asset that is key to the City’s revitalization efforts. Working closely with the City, the design delivered the first LEED Gold fire station to be completed in New England.

Award Winning

Received 2012 FIERO Honor (Gold) Award and the 2011 Fire Chief Station Style Bronze Award for Career Stations.
